【ニューヨーク　２５日時事】米航空宇宙局（NASA）の元宇宙飛行士が英国の音楽専門ラジオ局のインタビューで、政府は宇宙人の存在を隠ぺいしていると発言。米英メディアが相次いで報じる騒ぎに発展した。

　この元宇宙飛行士は、１９７１年に打ち上げられたアポロ１４号の元乗組員、エドガー・ミッチェル氏（７７）。

　同氏は２３日の放送で、政府は過去６０年にわたり宇宙人の存在を隠してきたが、「われわれのうちの何人かは一部情報について説明を受ける幸運に浴した」と説明。宇宙人は「奇妙で小さな人々」と呼ばれているなどと語った。（ヤフー･ニュースより転載）

この記事の信憑性を確かめることにした。
が、それは今日（７月２５日）、オーストラリアの友人が送ってくれた情報の中に、含まれていた。

それをそのまま紹介する。
訳は急いで私がつけたが、あえて、原文に忠実に訳してみた。
（荒っぽい訳なので、後日、改めて訳し直してみたい。）

FORMER NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr Edgar Mitchell - a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission - has stunningly claimed aliens exist.

And he says extra-terrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions - but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.

Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as 'little people who look strange to us.'

He said supposedly real-life ET's were similar to the traditional image of a small frame, large eyes and head.

Chillingly, he claimed our technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as theirs and "had they been hostile", he warned "we would be been gone by now".

Dr Mitchell, along with with Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard, holds the record for the longest ever moon walk, at nine hours and 17 minutes following their 1971 mission.

"I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real," Dr Mitchell said.

Officials from NASA, however, were quick to play the comments down.

A RECENT spate of UFO sightings around the world has believers in a frenzy, but even the inside scoop from a former astronaut is not enough to sway the sceptics.
Yesterday, aliens popped up in the news again　as NASA sought to distance itself from former Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell who claimed extra-terrestrials have been coming to visit for decades.

Dr Mitchell, 77, said governments had been covering it up for　60 years.

“I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes - we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit,” he said.

Dr Mitchell's former bosses were quick to distance themselves from the renewed buzz.
“NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe,” the agency said.
But the Australian Skeptics were not impressed by what Dr　Mitchell - or anyone else - thought they saw.　 Skeptic spokesman Barry Williams said today the truth was closer to home: it's all in your head, and you're wrong.
“We love mysteries and we love solving them, just look at how popular crime fiction and crime TV shows are,” Mr Williams said. “The brain needs to find answers, it can’t stand not knowing, so it comes to an explanation and quite often it’s wrong.”

しかし私はこの記事を読んだとき、肩から、スーッと力が抜けていくのを感じた。
「やはり、そうだったのだ」と。

私とワイフは、３５年近くの前の夜のこと、散歩中に、巨大なＵＦＯを目撃している。
以来、「あの夜、私たちが見たものは何だったのか」と、それをずっと考えてきた。
が、「考える」といっても、相手は、煙のような存在。
手でつかまえようとしても、いつもそのままどこかへ消えてしまう。
この３５年間、その歯がゆさとの闘いだった。

しかしとうとう、告白者が現れた。
アポロ１４号の元乗組員、エドガー・ミッシェル氏である。
これ以上の証言者が、ほかにいるだろうか。

しかも、６０年前といえば、「１９４７年のロズウェル事件」と、重なる。
６０年前、アメリカのロズウェルというところに、ＵＦＯが墜落している。
エドガー・ミッシェル氏がいう「６０年前」と、「１９４７年のロズウェル事件」とを結びつけるのは、まだ早計かもしれない。
しかしほかに結びつく話が、ない。

で、「奇妙で小さな人々」とは、どんな人々をいうのか。
ロズウェルでのＵＦＯ墜落事件では、「グレイ」とそののち呼ばれるようになった、小さな体の宇宙人が、アメリカ軍によって収容されている。
エドガー・ミシェル氏が言うところの、「小さな人々」というのは、その「グレイ」のことをさすのか。

今のところ詳細は不明だが、エドガー･ミッシェル氏の勇気に、敬意を表したい。
おそらくこれからしばらくの間、エドガー･ミシェル氏は、アメリカ政府内の、そのスジに人たちによる、猛攻撃にさらされるにちがいない。
ばあいによっては、逮捕、投獄されるかもしれない。
しかしそんなことをすれば、かえってエドガー・ミシェル氏の正当性が、証明されるようなもの。

……私は何度も、この記事を読みなおした。
「ＵＦＯを見た」というだけで、この日本では、奇人扱いされる。
しかし見たものは、見た。
記憶の中で、もう何千回も、反復してみたが、見たものは見た。
たったそれだけのことだが、そのつど、同時に私は、（私のワイフもそうだろうが……）、自分の脳みそを疑わねばならなかった。

が、この記事で、私はその重圧感から、解放された。
「やはり、そうだったのか」と。

私たちがあの夜見たものは、やはりＵＦＯだった。
宇宙人が操縦する、ＵＦＯだった。
今まで、私やワイフを奇人扱いしてきた者どもよ、悔しかったら、この記事を自分で読んでみることだ！
